Since the fall of sugarcane in the mid -1990s, Hawai'i Island has shifted its economic focus to tourism. For nearly 15 years the steady stream of travelers from the mainland, Canada and Japan have kept businesses running, restaurants crowded and hotels at near full occupancy.

However, the world's economic slowdown has not left the island untouched: It has crossed the Pacific and has begun to bear its teeth into the delicate economy of the tropical 50th state. Starting with business closures and un-renewed leases, the hotel industry on the Big Island saw decreased numbers and foreseeable economic challenges.
